      Global Birding: New Zealand

In 2018, Michael Hurben and Claire Strohmeyer relocated to Thailand for a work assignment - and during those twelve months, with Bangkok as their home base, used every free moment on weekends and holidays to bird, reaching 21 countries throughout the Eastern Hemisphere. The first part of their presentation will provide a brief overview of their attempt at full-blown global Big Year while being constrained by their day jobs, with recommendations on not-to-be-missed hotspots, itineraries, and guides. The second part will give an in-depth look at one of the most unique countries they visited: New Zealand. This remote and spectacular island nation is a singular birding destination; although it has a relatively low total species count (349), nearly a third of these birds are endemics - a number of them being particularly exotic and strange. Unlike many other international locales where a guide is necessary, New Zealand is perhaps best birded with a 'do-it-yourself' approach. Their discussion will include useful birding resources, specific hotspots on both the North and South Islands, the challenges of navigating the country (and driving on the left side), and other practical information. It will describe their often eventful excursions for endemics such as kiwi, weka, wrybill, kea, and many others, as well as the pelagic birding and several of the fantastic protected reserves. Photo by Michael Hurben, containing 5 pelagic species. The presentation will be in the community room of the Walker Library in Uptown Minneapolis. There is a parking lot underneath the library - enter off Lagoon Ave west of Hennepin - or you can find parking on the nearby streets.
