Abstract: Reflecting on two years of service on the National Security Council at the White House, Weinstein will discuss the challenges of democracy promotion in U.S. foreign policy. When the Obama Administration took office, democracy promotion was badly damaged from its association with the war in Iraq and suffering from a decline in America's reputation as a symbol of democracy around the world. There were also widespread fears of a "democratic recession" and concerns about the growing influence of rising authoritarian powers. Weinstein will discuss how the Obama Administration responded to these challenges, and sought to build a stronger normative and institutional framework for democracy support. He will focus also on the Administration's response to the Arab Spring, drawing lessons from the history of U.S. democracy policy in the region on how to more effectively promote democracy in the years ahead.

Jeremy Weinstein is Associate Professor of Political Science and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He serves as director of the Center for African Studies, and is an affiliated faculty member at CDDRL and CISAC. he is also a non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development in Washington, D.C. He is the author of Inside Rebellion: The Politics of Insurgent Violence (Cambridge University Press), and co-author of Coethnicity: Diversity and the Dilemmas of Collective Action (Russell Sage Foundation).
